A Tacoma man suspected of road rage led a total of five police cars on a chase through Pierce and King counties Saturday afternoon.

The incident began around 2:15, when a man called 911 to report his car had been shot at while he was driving northbound on Interstate 5 near the Tacoma Dome. He also told dispatchers he may have been shot in the back.

"Obviously, that ramps up our response quite a bit," said Washington State Trooper Cliff Pratt.

The caller began following the suspect's vehicle — a silver Ford Escape — while he was on the line with dispatchers, Pratt said.

The two cars got off the freeway and pulled into a parking lot, where the victim said the suspect pointed the gun at him once more. The two exchanged words, then took off again.

When two Fife police officers took up the pursuit, the caller stopped his chase. The Fife officers were joined by a State Patrol vehicle. When two King County sheriff's deputies arrived, the Fife officers left the pursuit.

The chase ended at Weyerhaeuser Way South and South 349th Street, where the officers boxed in the suspect. He was taken into custody on suspicion of eluding, weapons violations and DUI.

Upon examination, it turned out the victim had not been shot. However, his car had three bullet holes, Pratt said.
