YAKIMA, Wash. —

Washington apple growers are enjoying high prices for what looks like a record crop.

The state crop is projected at nearly 121 million boxes. The previous record was 109 million boxes shipped in the 2010-2011 marketing season. A box weighs 40 pounds.

The average price this year is about $29 per box, compared with $25 a year ago.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports ( http://is.gd/LrA1EO) Washington growers are filling the gap left by frost damage last spring to crops in New York and Michigan.

Washington is the nation's largest apple producer, growing about half the crop, followed by New York and Michigan.
