The family of a young Washington state girl severely injured when a gun in a classmate's backpack went off is suing the school district, saying it failed to heed clues that the boy was dangerous.

Amina Kocer-Bowman's family filed a $10 million claim against the Bremerton School District on Wednesday. The 8-year-old spent about six weeks in the hospital, required numerous surgeries and suffered lifelong injuries when the bullet pierced her internal organs and lodged in her spine.

The claim says the girl's teacher had been concerned that the boy who brought the gun to school had been acting out and fighting recently. It also says the boy had announced his intention to bring a gun to school to several other children.

The family is also suing the boy's parents, uncle and mother's boyfriend, saying they were negligent in allowing him access to handguns.
