BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. —

A Bainbridge Island couple enjoyed picking blueberries with their children on an island farm, and when it went up for sale last year they couldn't bear the thought of developers taking over. So they bought it.

Stacy Lewars had a career in light fixture design and her husband Dyline Tomine is a writer. Now she's a farm manager and he's a field hand, and they both spend a lot of time pruning and weeding. They say the changes over the past year have been challenging but worthwhile.

The two-and-a-half-acre property has more than 1,500 blueberry plants and includes a small dahlia farm. The family opened the Bainbridge Island Blueberry Co. last month for U-pick customers.

The Kitsap Sun reports ( http://is.gd/JTIKoq) they hope to expand the flower beds and host events as time goes on.
