The state Transportation Department says one big storm could wash out the 63-year-old bridge to Camano Island, cutting access for 15,000 island residents.
The department plans a new $26 million bridge on Highway 532.
The Daily Herald reports ( http://is.gd/AKhPtE) the project involves raising nearly a mile of highway 5-to-9 feet. Work is scheduled to start next summer and to finish in 2014.
A community open house on the bridge project is scheduled Tuesday evening at the Camano Center.
