The University of Washington may build transit-oriented apartments, shops or office space above an underground light rail station planned in Seattle's University District.

The project depends on property sales needing the approval of the Sound Transit board and the UW regents.

The Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce reports the transit agency will hold a public hearing Thursday on selling the air rights. A building could rise up to 65 feet high on the site.

The station is planned near the UW Tower, formerly the Safeco Tower. It would be part of the Northgate Link light rail extension from Husky Stadium that is expected to be completed in 2021.
