Civic-center proposition falls short in initial returns
A measure to build a new Mountlake Terrace civic center was falling short in early returns.

Mountlake Terrace voters appeared to be rejecting a $25 million bond measure to build a new civic center.
Early returns Tuesday showed Proposition 1 with a 56.09 percent approval rate, short of the 60 percent required to pass.
The proposed civic center would include a community/senior center, remodeled police station, renovated library, outdoor amphitheater and street improvements along 58th Avenue West and 232nd Street Southwest.
Critics of Prop. 1 argued that raising property taxes would hurt the local economy.
The city has been renting office space since a ceiling collapse at the former Civic Center in 2008.
