THE DALLES, Ore. —

Divers have recovered the body of a 19-year-old Eugene, Ore., man who was swept downstream while swimming in the Columbia River near The Dalles.

Wasco County sheriff's Chief Deputy Lane Magill says the Skamania County, Wash., sheriff's dive team helped recover the body of James Hawkins on Monday.

Friends told the sheriff's office that Hawkins swam Sunday to a small island near the base of the Highway 197 Dalles Bridge and was trying to swim back when the current overpowered him. Boats from the Wasco and Sherman county sheriff's offices and Oregon State Police searched the river until dark. The search resumed Monday.
