OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Washington state officials are asking the public to help them name two new state ferries.

The state has 23 ferries in its fleet and will be adding two 144-car ferries. Many have names reflecting the state's tribal heritage.

The two new ferries will be named by the Washington State Transportation Commission. Suggested names should have statewide significance and represent the state's image and culture. The names should be geographical, or tribal or relate to the state's nautical heritage. The names should be widely recognized and not have commercial overtones.

Naming proposals are due to the commission by Sept. 26.
