Women insured through individual health insurance plans now won't pay deductibles, co-payments or coinsurance for preventive services.

The benefit for the new services, which took effect Wednesday, include well-woman visits, counseling for sexually transmitted infections, counseling and screening for HIV, screening for domestic violence and gestational diabetes, as well as contraceptives, is part of the federal Affordable Care Act.

Those with employer-sponsored plans will get the new benefit when their plans renew. Some employers, such as churches and similar organizations, are exempt from covering contraceptives for their employees if they object on religious grounds.
