SPOKANE, Wash. —

The Spokane County Jail says an inmate who apparently attempted to commit suicide by hanging was not alone in his cell at the time.

Jail Capt. John McGrath tells KXLY (http://is.gd/hdtrdY) corrections officers are investigating what happened with Robert Ruth. Guards found him unresponsive Friday in the cell. He's now on life support at a hospital and reportedly brain dead.

Ruth was arrested for investigation of rendering criminal assistance to Charles Wallace after he escaped a treatment program. Wallace wounded two deputies in June after they pulled over a vehicle in which he was riding. Wallace shot and killed himself as officers closed in on a stolen car after a chase.
