SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. —

An animal protection officer broke a window to rescue a dog left alone in a car in the parking lot of the Spokane Valley Mall.

Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service says the temperature in the car had reached 114 degrees Tuesday, although it was only 80 outside. Four windows had been lowered about an inch, but the basset hound was panting heavily.

KREM reports ( http://is.gd/cT4580) Officer Francie Rapier and firefighters were unable to unlock the doors of the SUV, so she decided to break a window.

The owner was watching a movie at the mall. He was cited for unsafe confinement and animal cruelty.
