The U.S. Coast Guard in Juneau hosted the Buoy Tender Olympics on Wednesday.
The Buoy Tender Olympics is intended to highlight the skills needed to work aboard a buoy tender and maintain navigational aids, such as buoys and lights. It featured five events, including a chain pull, tug of war and survival swim.
It came in the midst of the annual buoy tender roundup, which the Coast Guard said included vessels based in Alaska, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.
Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer 3rd Class Grant DeVuyst said the gathering helps to build camaraderie.
The Coast Guard said crews aboard its buoy tenders in Alaska service 1,250 navigational aids along 42,000 miles of coastline. They also participate in search and rescue, environmental protection and law enforcement missions.
