An egg company says it's horrified that its Southern Oregon distribution center was used for cockfighting.
The Oregonian reports ( http://bit.ly/LCISMN) that Willamette Egg Farms helped to lobby for an Oregon law phasing out a cage that houses several birds in one compartment, and is backing a federal ban.
On Saturday, Jackson County sheriff's deputies arrested eight people at the Eagle Point facility. About 30 people fled. Deputies found one rooster dead, another badly injured.
Co-owner Greg Satrum says an employee suspected of organizing the cockfight never had contact with the company's animals and has been fired.
The company doesn't own roosters, and its hens are housed elsewhere.
Satrum said the company prides itself on humane treatment.
As he put it: "The last thing we want are angry chickens."
