BONNEY LAKE, Wash. —

A 16-year-old boy drowned Thursday afternoon while swimming in Lake Tapps with friends and family at Allen York Park.

Police say he was under water about 5 minutes before he was rescued. Bystanders performed CPR until medics arrived. He was rushed to a hospital where he died.

KOMO-TV reports ( http://is.gd/mPNazc) he was a sophomore at Bonney Lake High School and a football player.

Thursday was the last day of classes at the school, but the Sumner School District says the school will be open Friday to offer counseling for grieving students.
