LONGMIRE, Wash. —

Mount Rainier National Park officials say the popular Comet Falls Trail has been temporarily closed because of a washout and hazardous conditions.

The News Tribune reports (http://is.gd/KOpPEF) that a washout 10 feet across and 30 feet deep has undermined the trail. Recent rains have made things worse and snow and ice along the trail add to the hazard.

Park Superintendent Randy King said Tuesday the closure begins one mile beyond the trailhead.

King expects a park trail crew will reach the area next week to begin building a safe route around the washout. There's no timeline for reopening the trail.

The trailhead is four miles beyond Longmire on the road to Paradise. The 1.9-mile trail leads to the base of 320-foot Comet Falls, one of the park's longest waterfalls.
