SEATAC, Wash. —

McDonald's has been approved to open a restaurant at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after authorities earlier balked and asked airport staffers to try harder to attract a local vendor.

The Port of Seattle commission governs the airport. The News Tribune reports ( http://is.gd/hGlSCf) that the commission on Tuesday approved a 12-year lease for McDonald's Corp. to operate an outlet at the terminal end of the airport's B Concourse.

Construction is due to begin later this year with the restaurant opening in spring 2013.

The airport recently has been trying to have its mix of retailers and food vendors reflect the Puget Sound community.

Sea-Tac spokesman Perry Cooper said the effort to recruit a local restaurant for the spot likely failed for two reasons: the location was not in the prime central terminal area where there's a cluster of restaurants and the restaurant space needed an expensive remodeling.
