SPOKANE, Wash. —

At its meeting Monday the Spokane City Council is considering a $1.67 million settlement with the family of a man who was beaten to death in 2006 by police.

Terms of the settlement were reached last week in a mediation session.

The money would go to the family of Otto Zehm. He was fatally injured in police custody after he was wrongly suspected of taking money from an ATM. The settlement also calls for the city to deliver a letter of apology to Zehm's family and improve police training.

The lawsuit originally sought $14 million in damages.
