OLYMPIA, Wash. —

The state has accused the son of Lt. Gov. Brad Owen of receiving nearly $20,000 in illegal disability payments.

KING-TV reported Monday that Mark Owen was charged last month with theft and forgery and lying to collect the money. Investigators say he helped another co-worker receive $40,000.

The charges date to 2009, when his business partner at Kent Body and Paint shot him.

Investigators say Owens ultimately returned to work, but later claimed he was too injured and therefore qualified for disability. KING reports that in a phone message left with the state, Owen apparently did not hang up and can be heard saying he planned to receive more disability payments than he's entitled to.

A spokesman for Brad Owen says he's aware of the charges but has no comment.
