SEATTLE —

Commuters are facing slightly heavier traffic Tuesday, but still none of the massive gridlock feared with Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct closed for the second full weekday.

Transportation officials report more vehicles on the road compared to Monday and an earlier rush hour. There are also pockets of delays on highways and arterial streets in the region.

But state transportation spokesman Travis Phelps says commuters are still doing their part by taking the bus or water taxi and keeping schedules flexible.

Authorities began a nine-day closure of the elevated Alaskan Way Viaduct Friday evening. The aging, earthquake-vulnerable highway normally carries 110,000 vehicles a day. It's being partially demolished as part of a $3.2 billion project to replace it with a tunnel under downtown Seattle.
