A 34-year-old Mukilteo, Wash., woman accused of mistreating a 10-year-old girl who was emaciated when she was removed from the woman's home has been jailed on $500,000 bail.
Mary Mazalic was arrested this week for investigation of first-degree assault of a child. Snohomish County prosecutors expect to make a charging decision Monday.
The Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/mPS1dY) that the girl weighed just 51 pounds when she was removed from the home in August. That's about two-thirds the weight of a healthy child her age. She spent about two weeks in an Everett hospital being treated for severe malnutrition. Court documents say she also had multiple bruises, abrasions and scars.
The girl lived with her older brother and Mazalic, his girlfriend.
Defense lawyer David Marshall argued against the high bail, saying Mazalic has no felony record and wasn't likely to flee.
