Some 16,000 high-school students were named semifinalists Wednesday in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The designation makes the students eligible to compete for 8,300 merit scholarships worth more than $34 million that will be offered in the spring.

Locally, Lakeside School in Seattle topped the list with 31 semifinalists, followed by Bellevue's Interlake High, with 24, and Seattle's Garfield High, with 22.
