A Florida man died Monday night after he fell from steep cliffs at Mount Rainier National Park.

Climbers Tuesday morning recovered the body of Roger Alan Wagner, 59, of Ocala, Fla., park spokesman Kevin Bacher said. Wagner was taking pictures with his son, 31, near the Comet Falls Trail bridge above Christine Falls about 7 p.m. when he fell from the cliff into the water 40 feet below.

Because the cliffs were so steep and it was dark, rescuers couldn't attempt a recovery until Tuesday morning, Bacher said.

Overnight, Wagner's body was swept over the 69-foot falls, coming to rest 100 yards downstream from the road in the park.

Christine Falls is about halfway between the Nisqually entrance to the park and Paradise.

Bacher said he didn't know whether Wagner was killed in the original fall or when he went over the waterfall but said Wagner's son, who was on the bridge near the cliff, called to his father after he fell from the cliff but got no response.

The waterfall is a popular stop for tourists, and many stop at the viewpoint on the main road, Bacher said. But some people hike up the Comet Falls Trail for a better view, which is what Wagner and his son did.

The son was near his father on the bridge above the falls and heard his father fall.

Wagner's body was recovered by technical climbers with ropes, Bacher said, and will be turned over to the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office.

Wagner's death was the fourth on Mount Rainier this summer.

A skier died when he went into a crevasse, a climber died in an avalanche and another person died of a heart attack in the park, Bacher said.

Typically, he said, there are two to three deaths a year on Mount Rainier.
