Search-and-rescue volunteers from Snohomish County have recovered the body of a hiker from Bellingham who died Tuesday on Mount Pilchuck.

The 29-year-old man was hiking the mountain with his friends and was on the way down when he separated from his party without telling them, possibly taking a shortcut, said Rebecca Hover, spokeswoman with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.

She said his friends waited for him at the trailhead before calling authorities about 8 p.m.

Volunteers searched through the night and found the unidentified man's body about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday on the north side of the mountain, a distance from where he had been hiking, Hover said.

Search-and-rescue officials said the man apparently fell off a 300-foot cliff. The man's body was discovered at the base of the cliff.

A Sheriff's Office helicopter has brought the man's body down from the mountain, and has been turned over to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office.
