It's Seafair weekend and that means not only great fun but also traffic, parking issues, bridge closures and bus detours. Here's what you need to know.
The Blue Angels, those famous F/A-18 Hornets, will perform their aerobatics over Lake Washington 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile, thousands of people will descend on Stan Sayers Pit on Lake Washington for the much anticipated hydroplane races.
The Blue Angels performances will close Interstate 90 to all vehicles Friday, Saturday and Sunday between Island Crest Way on Mercer Island and Interstate 5 in Seattle. Closures will be 12:45 to 2:40 p.m. all three days.
For pedestrians and bicyclists, the I-90 bridge and ramps will close up to 30 minutes before the practices or shows. The exits from westbound I-90 to Island Crest Way and East Mercer Way on Mercer Island will remain open.
The express lanes will close at 10:45 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The express lanes will open to eastbound traffic at 3:30 p.m. each of those days.
Metro will reroute some buses that use the I-90 bridge and will also provide shuttle service between the Mercer Island and South Bellevue park and ride lots during the Blue Angels events.
The Sound Transit routes 550 and 554 will be rerouted onto Highway 520 and will not serve the Rainier Avenue-Interstate 90 station or the Mercer Island park and ride lot.
Information on rerouting: metro.kingcounty.gov/up/rr/reroutes.html.
Parking and shuttle service
The Port of Seattle is offering $10 all-day parking at Seattle Tacoma International Airport on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to drivers who present a free coupon that can be downloaded from the port and Seafair's websites.
Fans can park at the airport, then catch Link Light Rail from the airport to the Othello Station, where a free shuttle will transport them to the Seafair events on Lake Washington.
The parking is allowed at the main terminal airport garage in both general parking and terminal direct parking, on the fourth level. Vehicles must enter the garage after 6 a.m. and leave before midnight. A separate coupon will be needed for each day. The $10 parking coupons can be found at seati.ms/o4Hjd4 and portseattle.org/seatac/ground/.
There will also be parking Qwest Field Exhibition Center for $10 to $15 each day. And, of course, there will be parking in lots in downtown Seattle.
Fans are encouraged to park, then use light rail and the free shuttle to the events on Lake Washington.
Seward Park closures
Seward Park is closed this weekend during Blue Angels performances. Spectators can watch from Lake Washington Boulevard.
The park will close at 10 a.m. and reopen at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Drawspan openings on 520 bridge
On Friday and Sunday, traffic on the Highway 520 floating bridge will be stopped to allow the Army tug, The Major General Henry Knox, through the drawspan. The tug is participating in Seafair activities.
On Friday, the drawspan will open at 9 p.m. for about 30 minutes while the tug heads to the south end of Lake Washington.
On Sunday, the drawspan will open at 11 a.m. for about 30 minutes while the tug makes its return trip.
Drivers will be alerted to the drawspan openings on electronic signs on highways leading to the bridge.
