ABERDEEN, Wash. —

Federal dollars will pay for a cleanup of marine debris in Grays Harbor. The $100,000 restoration grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will pay for a marine survey and removal of creosote-treated pilings from Grays Harbor.

KXRO-Radio reports the survey data also will be used to produce a comprehensive map of the harbor. Providing matching money for the project is the state Department of Natural Resources. The initial survey for creosote-treated pilings is taking place this week. The pilings have damaged the environment and pose a health threat to people.

Also participating in the project are the Quinault Indian Nation, the Grays Harbor County Marine Resources Committee and the Nature Conservancy.
