OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Some trucks that have never needed a federal Transportation Department number - trucks that are used in landscaping, construction and other businesses - will have a year to acquire one under a new requirement.

The Washington State Patrol says the number is free and can be acquired though the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's website. The registration helps enforce commercial truck and driver safety regulations.

After June of next year, failure to display the USDOT number could result in a fine of $500 or more.
