OLYMPIA, Wash. —

A Democrat familiar with his plans says U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee will announce a run for Washington governor next week.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Inslee's plans have not been officially made public. Inslee plans to make his announcement in Seattle.

Inslee has long expressed interest in being the Democratic nominee, saying he would consider a run to replace Gov. Chris Gregoire. She announced earlier this month that she would not seek a third term.

Inslee has represented Washington's 1st Congressional District for more than a decade, covering northern suburbs of Seattle. He's been a leader in Congress on battling climate change and promoting clean-energy alternatives.

Attorney General Rob McKenna recently declared his candidacy for the Republican nomination.
