The National Insurance Crime Bureau reports auto thefts increased nearly 10 percent last year in Washington to more than 29,000. That's an average of 80 stolen vehicles a day in the state.
The bureau's report Tuesday said most of the thefts were in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area - more than 16,000. Spokane had nearly 2,800 and Yakima almost 1,300.
But in terms of auto theft rate - the number per 100,000 residents - Spokane is fourth-highest in the nation; Yakima is 10th and Seattle 13th.
