PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. —

A University of Washington professor is analyzing data collected from the bottom of Admiralty Inlet to help determine the best location for underwater turbines between Whidbey Island and Marrowstone Island, near Port Townsend.

The Peninsula Daily News reports professor John Horne will use the information from camera and sonar devices that were retrieved Wednesday to paint a picture of underwater life 200 feet deep.

The two-year, $746,000 Energy Department project will find the best method for mapping the ecosystem before the Snohomish County Public Utility District installs two turbines in 2013.

The project would generate enough electricity for about 50 homes and test prospects for more tidal power.
