SATSOP, Wash. —

Satsop, Wash.-area firefighters have rescued a 17-year-old horse that fell 200 feet down a steep embankment.

Fire District 5 Chief Dan Prater tells KXRO that the horse apparently got too close to the edge of the embankment Thursday morning. Rescuers from two fire districts and the nearby towns of McCleary and Brady spent hours chopping down trees, rigging a harness, rope and pulley system, sedating the horse and finally hoisting it to safety Thursday afternoon.

Prater says the animal was examined by a vet and is OK.

Another recent horse rescue for Prater's department involved digging out an animal that climbed onto a pile of manure - and sank in up to its chest.
