University of Washington students returned to Gerberding Hall Thursday to protest the university's contract with a global food-services provider accused of abusing workers' rights.
The rally occurred a day after police arrested and cited more than two dozen students for trespassing after an hours-long sit-in, first at interim President Phyllis Wise's office and then in a conference room.
About 60 students affiliated with the Kick Out Sodexo Coalition headed to a Board of Regents meeting at Gerberding Hall around 11:30 a.m. Thursday to urge the university to cancel the contract with the food-services provider Sodexo, said sophomore Morgan Currier, one of the students arrested Wednesday evening. Sodexo supplies concessions at UW athletic facilities under a five-year contract that expires in June 2012.
A smaller group returned at 2:30 p.m. to testify before the full Board of Regents.
Two human-rights groups, Human Rights Watch and TransAfrica Forum, have released reports alleging that Sodexo uses intimidation tactics to discourage unionizing and denies workers in other countries breaks or full pay. Sodexo deny abusing workers' rights and UW spokesman Norm Arkans said Wednesday there aren't sufficient grounds for cutting the contract, and the school has no intention of doing so.
