RAYMOND, Wash. —

A 31-year-old driver from Michigan is dead after his car crashed during a sanctioned auto rally in Washington state.

Radio station KXRO reports that Matthew Marker of Rapids City, Mich., was participating in the Olympus Road Rally in southwestern Washington Saturday evening when his car lost control going around a curve, slid down a 40-foot embankment and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident occurred about 10 miles northeast of Raymond in Pacific County.

The Washington State Patrol says neither Marker's passenger nor any spectators were injured.
