Spokane appeals court upholds Russell conviction

A state appeals court in Spokane has upheld the 14-year sentence giving to Frederick Russell for a vehicle homicide conviction in the deaths of three Washington State University students.

SPOKANE, Wash. —

A state appeals court in Spokane has upheld the 14-year sentence giving to Frederick Russell for a vehicle homicide conviction in the deaths of three Washington State University students.

The court ruled Tuesday the trial court made no error in convicting Russell in 2007. However, the appeals court said he should be given credit for 384 days he was held during an extradition process.

The Moscow-Pullman Daily News reports Russell fled to Ireland before his trial in 2001. He was captured in 2005 and sent back to the United States.

At the time of his drunken driving crash 10 years ago, Russell was studying criminal justice at Washington State University.

The crash killed 22-year-old Brandon Clements of Wapato, 21-year-old Stacy Morrow of Milton, and 21-year-old Ryan Sorensen of Westport.
