Kids explore fine points of the brain

MIKE SIEGEL/THE SEATTLE TIMES

Above: This is Brain Awareness Week, an international event to promote the benefits of brain research. The University of Washington on Tuesday hosted 600 local students in grades four to 12 at an open house at the Museum of History & Industry. The students learned about the brain through 50 hands-on stations and a lecture by Eric Chudler, a UW research associate professor in the UW's Departments of Bioengineering and Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine who created Neuroscience for Kids, a web resource for students and teachers. Fifth-grader Cassie Coates, from Lake Forest Park Elementary School, watches a computer monitor as she gets her brain's blood flow measured with the help of Dr. Deepak Sharma, left, Harborview Medical Center anesthesiologist, and visiting scholar Parichat Curry. Behind Coates is classmate Audrey Van Bogart.
