Astoria firefighters call fires 'suspicious'

Officials in Astoria say firefighters believe the overnight fire at the waterfront site of a longtime salmon and tuna cannery had a suspicious origin.

ASTORIA, Ore. —

Officials in Astoria say firefighters believe the overnight fire at the waterfront site of a longtime salmon and tuna cannery had a suspicious origin.

The overnight fire destroyed a cafe and office building once part of the Bumble Bee cannery. The company shut down its Astoria operations in 1980.

City spokesman Brett Estes said Friday that firefighters believe the fire was what he termed "suspicious in nature," but aren't saying exactly what leads them to think so.

Fire officials said they were fighting one fire in the cafe when a second broke out in the next-door building that has been converted to office and commercial use.
