Hood Canal surface waters improving for fish

Surface waters in southern Hood Canal recovered their oxygen levels to some degree early Wednesday morning, giving the fish a little more room to breathe, officials said.

Surface waters in southern Hood Canal recovered their oxygen levels to some degree early Wednesday morning, giving the fish a little more room to breathe, officials said.

For waters down to 30 feet deep, oxygen levels were above a safe 5 parts per million all day Wednesday, according to a monitoring buoy at Hoodsport.

That’s not as deep as many fish species would like to be, but it’s better than the 6-foot depth to which they were confined on Tuesday, according to Wayne Palsson, a biologist with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Palsson reported Wednesday morning that he saw a few scattered dead fish and spot prawns that apparently died overnight, but nothing like the hundreds of fish and thousands of prawns he observed Tuesday. Birds were still feasting on Tuesday’s remains, he said.
