Idaho man shot in Oregon after eluding police

Police wounded an armed Idaho man who had eluded authorities since late last week following a robbery, kidnapping and car theft near a central Oregon campground.

Police wounded an armed Idaho man who had eluded authorities since late last week following a robbery, kidnapping and car theft near a central Oregon campground.

James Patrick Powers, a 47-year-old Boise resident, was shot Saturday evening by an Oregon State Police trooper as he walked toward the city limits of the town of Oakridge.

He’s being treated in a Springfield area hospital.

After last Thursday’s robbery, authorities say Powers ditched a stolen vehicle after attempting to elude Oregon State Police troopers on Oregon’s Highway 58.

Police said Powers was armed at the time of the incident at Cultus Lake Campground in Deschutes County.

He’s a registered sex offender, convicted in 1981 in California of rape.

Powers also has a felony warrant in Idaho for a probation violation.
