Dick's Drive-In polls fans for new location

For the first time in 36 years, Dick’s Drive-In is opening a new restaurant — and fans can help decide where.

For the first time in 36 years, Dick’s Drive-In is opening a new restaurant — and fans can help decide where.

The Seattle-based company has a poll on its website, dicksdrivein.com, where voters can choose between a northern, southern, or eastern location.

According to Jim Spady, the company’s vice president, the website has already crashed once because there were so many votes. As of Tuesday evening, the site had reported more than 25,000 votes.

“It’s humbling and amazing how many want to weigh in,” Spady said.

Spady said he wants the new restaurant to be within 20 miles of the University of Washington, which is near the company’s flagship store.

Spady’s father, Dick Spady, co-founded the company in 1954, bringing Seattle one of its first modern fast-food restaurants.

Spady said his father started the business with two partners, whose nicknames were “Tom” and “Ghorm.” They decided Dick had the best name, and bestowed it on their new restaurant.

Back in those days, Spady said, burgers were 19 cents, fries were 11 cents, and shakes were 21 cents.

The website poll will be open until Sept. 30.
