Crews blasting better I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass

Two more years of blasting remain on a $570 million project to improve Interstate 90 across Snoqualmie Pass.

The Associated Press

HYAK, Wash. —

Two more years of blasting remain on a $570 million project to improve Interstate 90 across Snoqualmie Pass.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports it's one of the Transportation Department's largest road projects.

Crews are removing more than 1 million tons of rock and building six new bridges along a three-mile stretch east of the summit.

When completed, I-90 will have six new lanes, a snowshed across the entire freeway and a longer area for drivers to remove tire chains.

The main east-west highway across Washington carries 27,000 vehicles on a weekday and many more on weekends and holidays.
