Several people arrested in graffiti incident in Kent

Seven people were arrested for spraying graffiti in Kent on Sunday.

Seven people were arrested Sunday after being caught spraying graffiti on the walls of a railroad underpass in Kent, according to Kent Police.

Bicycle officers on routine patrol along Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railroad tracks spotted the group spray painting the concrete walls at the Highway 167 underpass, according Kent police. When confronted, the group ran up onto the overpass.

When officers caught up to them, four stopped, but four continued walking to the Highway 167 shoulder. Officers in patrol vehicles apprehended them.

Officers recovered 36 cans of spray paint and several plastic bags containing paint nozzles.

One of the suspects had a receipt showing that 36 cans of spray paint were purchased that day at a large retail business in Kent.

Seven of the eight had spray paint on their hands and were arrested on suspicion of malicious mischief, police said. Because they were walking along the railroad tracks, all eight were charged with criminal trespass.

One suspect appears to be a prolific tagger in Kent, said Kent police.

"Some of this graffiti is very artistic and those arrested appear to be very talented. However, this is not the venue to express that creativity and art ability. Graffiti is illegal. Tagging property in Kent will not be tolerated," Kent Police Chief Steve Strachan said in a news release.

The graffiti will be painted over during routine volunteer graffiti removal operations.
