Q&A on math textbook controversy
School districts in Seattle, Bellevue and Issaquah are dealing with debates over which math textbook series is best for their high-school students: the inquiry-based "Discovering" series or the more traditional Holt mathematics series. To find out more about the books and the philosophies behind them, we talked to the executives who publish them.

Just a few weeks after Seattle lost a lawsuit over its controversial choice of a math textbook series for its high-school students, the same issue is playing out in Bellevue and Issaquah.
In all three districts, the debate has been between the inquiry-based "Discovering" series, published by Key Curriculum Press, and the more traditional Holt mathematics series, published by Holt McDougal.
The Seattle School Board chose the Discovering series a year ago, but recently lost a lawsuit in King County Superior Court, where a judge called the board's decision to adopt Discovering "arbitrary" and "capricious."
