WA Transportation Commission OKs ferry fare hike

The Washington Transportation Commission has voted to increase fares on state ferries by 2.5 percent across the board, effective Oct. 11.

SEATTLE —

The Washington Transportation Commission has voted to increase fares on state ferries by 2.5 percent across the board, effective Oct. 11.

That means the central Puget Sound round-trip passenger fare will rise from $6.70 to $6.90; the one-way car and driver rate will go from $11.55 to $11.85.

The commission on Tuesday also rejected a proposal to add a 10 percent "super surcharge" during the months of July and August.

An existing 25 percent peak-season surcharge for vehicles remains in effect; the summer surcharge would have been on top of that.

Commissioners said they were concerned about how a summer surcharge would affect those on fixed incomes, especially since fares would be increasing.
