Referendum 71 signatures still too close to call
On the day before signatures are due, backers of a referendum to repeal a law giving Washington's same-sex domestic partners all the state benefits of married couples say it's still too close to call to see if they have enough signatures to qualify for November's ballot.
On the day before signatures are due, backers of a referendum to repeal a law giving Washington's same-sex domestic partners all the state benefits of married couples say it's still too close to call to see if they have enough signatures to qualify for November's ballot.
Gary Randall, whose Faith and Freedom Network is part of a coalition that's spearheading the Referendum 71 effort, said in an e-mail that by Saturday morning, they believe they will have the 120,577 signatures required by the Secretary of State.
But he also said they do not have an adequate cushion of signatures, in case some of those gathered are invalidated. They are making a last-minute push to gather signatures, which are due in Olympia at 2 p.m. Saturday.
