Wash. visitor info center closes to save money

The Washington state Visitor Information Center, which has guided people to tourism activities around the state for nearly years, is set to close starting Wednesday.

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

The Washington state Visitor Information Center, which has guided people to tourism activities around the state for nearly years, is set to close starting Wednesday.

The Olympian reports that the closure is an effort to save $284,000 over two years, one of the most visible state budget cuts as the state begins its new two-year budget cycle Wednesday.

The center, built in 1981, is the first place where many visitors to the Capitol Campus stop to get maps and directions and ask for help.
