Fourth union sues Gregoire over contract money

A fourth union is suing Gov. Chris Gregoire because her proposed budget doesn't include money to pay for a new labor contract.

OLYMPIA — A fourth union is suing Gov. Chris Gregoire because her proposed budget doesn't include money to pay for a new labor contract.

The Service Employees International Union Local 1119 is the latest to sue Gregoire over unfunded contracts. SEIU 1119NW represents about 22,000 nurses, health care employees, and mental health workers in hospitals, agencies, and clinics statewide.

The contract was filed on behalf of 900 state registered nurses. The union filed the lawsuit Thursday in King County Superior Court.

Gregoire has said the state simply can't afford to the raises in the face of a massive budget shortfall.

The lawsuit argues that because there is a nursing shortage, it costs the state more to pay overtime.
