St. Helens observatory closing for winter

The closest viewing point to Mount St. Helens, the Johnston Ridge Observatory, will close for the winter on Nov. 9.

AMBOY, Wash. —

The closest viewing point to Mount St. Helens, the Johnston Ridge Observatory, will close for the winter on Nov. 9.

The Forest Service says it will reopen in mid-May, depending on snow levels.

The Mount St. Helens Visitor Center at Silver Lake near Interstate 5 will remain open this winter. It's operated by the state.
