King County sheriff's deputies are investigating the shooting death of a man in his 20s in the Boulevard Park neighborhood of unincorporated South King County.
According to Sgt. John Urquhart, spokesman for the King County Sheriff's Office, a resident of the Willow Terrace Apartments at 1100 S. 99th St. called police around 10:35 p.m. on Monday after hearing gunfire.
The victim, who has not yet been identified by the King County Medical Examiner's Office, was found behind the wheel of his car in the parking lot of the complex. He had been shot at least once, Urquhart said. No arrests have been made in connection with the death, authorities said.
Passenger held after driver shot to death
Snohomish County sheriff's deputies arrested a man in connection with a shooting Tuesday morning that killed the driver of the car he was in, police said.
The victim, described as in his 20s, was riding with two other men about 2 a.m. along the 14500 block of Admiralty Way in unincorporated Lynnwood, near South Everett, when shots were fired and the driver was killed, said sheriff's spokeswoman Rebecca Hover.
The car ran into a fence along the side of the road and came to a stop, Hover said. The third man in the vehicle was questioned and released, she said.
The three men apparently knew one another, Hover said. She said that no further arrests were expected and that it was unclear on Tuesday what prompted the shooting.
Agencies need help tracking dead birds
If you find a dead bird, particularly a crow, this summer, public-health agencies in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties want to know about it.
Sightings of dead birds may be evidence that West Nile virus is at work. The virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, can be serious and sometimes fatal to humans. In past years, birds and horses in this state have contracted the disease. Notification of dead birds may be made to:
• Public Health — Seattle & King County at 206-205-4394
• Snohomish County Department of Health at 425-339-8720
• Tacoma Pierce County Health Department at: 253-798-6578
The state Department of Health also requests notification at 866-78VIRUS.
Starting this month, some dead birds will be evaluated for West Nile virus.
To protect yourself from West Nile virus and to eliminate breeding places for mosquitoes:
• Eliminate all standing water around your home.
• Make sure there are intact screens on open windows.
• Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants and socks if you're going to be outdoors in the evening. Wear insect repellent on exposed skin.
Grounded ship on way to shore
The Coast Guard is allowing a cruise ship that became grounded in Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park to return to a dock near Juneau.
The Coast Guard says the 207-foot Spirit of Glacier Bay will be escorted to Auke Bay, about 13 miles north of downtown Juneau.
The ship carrying 51 crew and passengers became grounded on Monday. A Coast Guard response boat managed to tow the ship on a rising tide, and all passengers were taken off the ship. There were no injuries.
The Coast Guard said an inspection reported no breach of the external hull. However, the ship does have structural damage, which must be corrected before it can again carry passengers.
Officials say the cause of the grounding remains under investigation.
Woman in canal was shooting victim
A woman whose body was found in a canal near Sunnyside was shot to death.
Yakima County Deputy Coroner Jack Hawkins said an autopsy on Monday indicated she had been shot less than a week before her body was found on Friday.
Officials were still trying to identify the woman, who appeared to be in her early 20s.
