PrintBorrowed car ferry will begin training for its runs to Port Townsend
A Pierce County ferry that will be used on the Port Townsend-Keystone route will start practicing dockings on Monday.
Beginning Monday, the Steilacoom II, a ferry the state is borrowing from Pierce County for the Keystone-Port Townsend run, will begin training on the route.
Local residents will see the vessel landing at the terminals and maneuvering in and out of Keystone Harbor.
Crew training will last about a week, and vehicle ferry service will begin in early February.
The route has been without a car ferry since late November when Department of Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond pulled all of the Steel Electric boats that serve the route out of service because of hull damage. Those four 80-year-old boats will be replaced.
