Fatal accident closes northbound I-5 near Marysville

A fatal collision near Marysville has completely shut down northbound traffic on Interstate 5 and one lane of southbound traffic.

Seattle Times Snohomish County bureau

A fatal collision near Marysville has completely shut down northbound traffic on Interstate 5 and one lane of southbound traffic.

Shortly after 3 p.m., an SUV traveling southbound on I-5 went off the roadway, crossed over the median and struck a charter bus heading northbound. The SUV was engulfed in flames, and the driver of the vehicle died at the scene, said State Patrol Trooper Kirk Rudeen.

The charter bus was empty except for a female driver who was seriously injured. She has been airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.

It's unclear how long northbound traffic on I-5 will be closed, Rudeen said. Cars already were backed up for about six miles an hour after the incident.

Two lanes of traffic are open on southbound I-5, but traffic is still moving slowly.
